ImprovisationaLguitarist,turntablistandcomposerOtomoYoshihidewasbornAugust1,1959inYokohama,Japan;theSonofanengineer,asachildhebuilthisownradioAndelectronicoscillator,andasateenbegancreatingsoundcollagesbymeansofopen-reeltaperEcorders.Duringhighschool,YoshihideperformedinalocalRockbandbeforemovingontofreejazz,influencedprimarilybysaxophonisTKaoruAbeandguitaristMasayukiTakAyanagi;whileauniversitystudent,healsobecamefascinatedwithethnicmusic,andin1981traveledtoHainan,Chinatoresearchthearea'smusicalculture.UponreturningtoTokyo,YoshihidebeganregularlyperformingfreeimprovisationsetsatthelocalGoodmanclub,althoughhemaintainedarelativelylowprofileuntil1987,whenheappearedinaduowithsaxophonistJUNjiHiroseinadditiontoconcurrentstintsinthebandsNoProblemandORT.In1990,YoshihidejoinedbassistKatoHideki'sgroupPlayerPianoandalsoformedhisownnoiserockgroup,GroundZERO.From1992to1994,healsoledtheDoubleUnitOrchestra.OtherYoshihide-helmedgroupsoftheperiodincludedMosQuitoPaperandSamplingVirusProject;followingthe1998dissolutionofGroundZero,hisworkmovedincreasinglytowardsminimalisminprojectsincludingI.S.O.andFilament.
